چکیده

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a noninvasive method to deliver highly concentrated energy deep in the body and it has been explored for tissue ablation for over half a century. A safe clinical use requires that the focus is guided by an imaging method. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides such features as excellent soft tissue contrast, temperature sensitivity and ability to detect thermally coagulated tissue, that make it well suited for the guidance, control, and monitoring of thermal therapies. The treatment of uterine fibroids with MRI guided HIFU has been approved by the FDA and is on its way to becoming routine. In addition there are several clinical reports demonstrating the feasibility of MR-HIFU for the treatment of breast, liver, brain and bone tumors. Pre-clinical animal testing of endo-cavity devices shows promise for the treatment of prostate and esophageal cancers.

MatMRI and MatHIFU: software toolboxes for real-time monitoring and control of MR-guided HIFU

BACKGROUND The availability of open and versatile software tools is a key feature to facilitate pre-clinical research for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) and expedite clinical translation of diagnostic and therapeutic medical applications. In the present study, two customizable software tools that were developed at the T...

Synthesis and Application of New Gadolinium-Porphyrins as Potential MR Imaging Contrast Agents for Cancer Detection in Nude Mice

Two new potential magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, Gd-hematoporphyrin (Gd-H) and Gd-tetra-carboranylmethoxyphenyl-porphyrin (Gd TCP), were synthesized and applied to nude mice with human melanoma (MM 138) xenografts. These agents showed a high relaxivity because of their greater potential to coordinate water molecules. The reduction of T1 relaxation times of 16 and 21% was observed i...

MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound for noninvasive cancer treatment

Magnetic resonance (MR)-high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an innovative, noninvasive tumour ablation technique. MR imaging and focused ultrasound are combined allowing real-time anatomic guidance and temperature mapping during treatment. Recently, the volumetric ablation approach has been introduced in order to reduce treatment length and provide more homogeneous tumour ablation. Afte...

Computer simulation and temperature measurement for MR hyperthermia therapy using coaxial-slot antenna

Introduction Hyperthermia therapy is commonly used for tumor treatment that already has been widely investigated. The principle of hyperthermia therapy employs the clear difference in heat sensitivity of normal cells and tumor cells at 42°C to 43°C and above. This difference is used for selective killing of only the tumor cells. Recently, hyperthermia therapy combined with magnetic resonance im...

Comparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...
